Xbox 720 'controller' concept (image)

Just wanted to share this concept I whipped up.

Touch screen in center of controller near the top which contains the start / select button. Thoughts? Too weird?

Too awkward to use a touch screen for that. Also, you didn't even include the better d-pad and thumb sticks on the new controllers.

It's not too weird, there's just not enough thought put into it.

What's the purpose of the screen? If it is to complement gameplay, why is it so small? How do I pause? Where is the Guide button? Why does it have rounded corners? Why is it that aspect ratio? How do I comfortably touch the screen without one or other of the sticks getting in the way?

It'd sorta be the Xbox guide and includes the Start and Select button on the sides, but you can use it for gameplay reasons as well.

I was even thinking of maybe going back to the original Xbox controller design, and put the Start and Select button on the sides.

So what's the advantage of replacing those physical buttons with a touchscreen?

And how can the screen be used for functions like "Pause", that need to be available all the time, but also for gameplay?

That's better than none at all, although you'd want to think about why they were moved in the first place. You have bigger design concerns though, in terms of why you have the screen at all.

Hmm... Maybe have the select button always displayed on the left side and start button on the right.

I'm still trying to work out the design, and maybe give a new perspective on the controller. A 'gimmicky' perspective. ;) Just throwing some ideas out there.

To be quite honest, I would not complain if they kept the 360's design on the controller, with an improved D-Pad.

I really like the xbox controller we have now, but to me it would be really lame and boring if microsoft decided to keep the exact same current controller for this new xbox machine. I want to hold something new and different in my hands, not the same crap.
Playstation controllers are very uncomfortable, i can't stand them. I do own the system too.

That touch screen would be way too small to be of any use.

Why does companies want touch screens.

The 360 and PS3 controllers are perfect as is, use those next gen. The reason I stopped buying Nintendo was because of motion controls, tablet controllers, and all that crap. Stay with the basics. There is no need to fix what was never broken in the first place.
