Collecting details on XBone features and sources for that info

#1odinlowejr88Posted 6/5/2013 5:16:30 PM
I'm looking to create a comprehensive list of the known features of the XBone both negative AND positive with links to the different news articles or sources where those features are discussed or confirmed. I'm going to be stealing a good amount of FacetiousSage's work on the list he made (sorry! =P) and am looking for features that I haven't listed and articles or links to sites confirming those features.

If you have sources that haven't yet been included please post them like this (although the HTML formatting isn't needed, I just did that to make it look pretty):

~EXAMPLE~
Topic: This will be where we list any different topics being discussed in the source, if more than one is discussed please separate each with a "/"
Source: This will be the website address where one can go to view the article or video being discussed
Author: The person who wrote the article/made the video/is pictured in the video and a timestamp of when the article or video was written/posted if possible
MS Source: The name of any employees referenced or a quote of where the information in the article/video came from
Summary: A short description of the relevant information to be found in the article/video. If it is a video it would be helpful to include the timing one can go to if they want to see what is being referred to (Example: 2:24 - You can see a comparison of the real laggy nature of the XBone to what was shown in the reveal)

Topic: Fees for selling used games
Source: http://majornelson.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-and-used-games/
Author: Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson
MS Source: Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson
Summary: This short article is an update that microsoft posted at their own website trying to clarify what they meant when they discussed used games.

Please create a new list (the example above) for each different source.

Of course I can't force anyone to follow this format but it would be very helpful.

So far here are the features I would like sources and info on:

Negative features:
- XBone will have a high cost at approximately $400-$600
- XBox Live will still have a fee and it may even be much higher
- Every XBone will come with a Kinect built in and if it is removed or damaged the entire console will become unusable
- The Kinect's camera and mic will always be on and recording everything and Microsoft will be able to remotely connect to pick up and/or analyze these recordings
- The XBone will NOT be backwards compatible for digital or physical games
- The XBone will NOT focus primarily on gaming but on it's TV features. Gamers will buy it no matter what is put in it.
- It will not be possible to remove or replace the default harddrive which will only be 500GB
- The hardware speccs of the XBone will be much lower than the PS4 and will be unstable causing overheating problems
- There will be additional fees to buy or sell used games, possibly increasing the price all the way to the MSRP
- There will be restrictive DRM policies
- You will be requiremed to connect to the internet every 24 hours or you will become unable to play the games you have installed/downloaded
- Support for independent developers is being greatly reduced and they will only be able to get their games published if they can get one of the major publishing companies interested
- Many of the exclusives will just be sequels, there will be a lack of good new exclusives for the XBone

Positive Features:
- You can watch TV on the XBone without having to switch inputs or exit the game you are playing
- You can use voice commands to do things such as change channels, turn the volume up or down, or even to turn the console on when it is off
- Includes a blu-ray player
- Will be able to chat with friends over skype while playing games or watching tv
- Game worlds will be able to evolve and continue functioning even when you're not playing and the XBone will be able to learn your gaming habits so your friends can play against your "shadow" when you're not available
- XBone will record where you are in a show or game so you can start over at the exact point you stopped at, even on a different console
- A new more comfortable controller
- Allows you to integrate with certain touchscreen devices (cell phones/tablets) to use them to navigate
- New achievements system that branches out even further with things such as achievements for watching certain shows
- "Game DVR" a built in system that will keep recordings of your recent gameplay so you can share it with your friends

Here's an example of what I plan to do with the info in a new thread:

General Information:
Source: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xboxone/what-it-is
Summary: Microsofts official "here's the XBox One" page. Gives a brief overview of several of the features it will come with.

Negative features:
Fees for selling used games
Source: http://kotaku.com/you-will-be-able-to-trade-xbox-one-games-online-micros-509140825
Author: JASON SCHREIER at 5/21/13 5:54pm
MS Source: Microsoft VP Phil Harrison and Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson
Summary: In this article Microsoft VP Phil Harrison says that XBone games will come with a one time use code so when you play a game on your XBone it becomes linked to your profile and that game disk can't be used while on anyone elses profile. You can still take the CD to a friends house and play it on their XBone but if on the friend's profile they will have to pay full MSRP or you will have to login to your profile while you are there.
Source: http://majornelson.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-and-used-games/
Author: Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson
MS Source: Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson
Summary: The only real meat in this article is: "While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail. Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios."
Source: http://majornelson.com/2013/05/24/xbox-one-and-used-games-2/
Author: Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson
MS Source: Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson
Summary: This is an update to their previous article stating only "Xbox One is designed to support the trade in and resale of games. Reports about our policies for trade in and resale are inaccurate and incomplete. We will disclose more information in the near future."
Source: http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/publishers-to-receive-cut-of-xbox-one-pre-owned-sales-at-retail/0116137
Author: Ben Parfitt Friday, May 24th 2013 at 9:32PM BST
MS Source: "Retail sources have told MCV that Microsoft has this week briefed key retail partners" Later updates to the article reference Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson.
Summary: "Retailers will be free to charge whatever they wish for pre-owned Xbox One games, but both Microsoft and publishers will take a percentage cut of every sale." After a game is sold at a retail outlet MS's systems will update with that info and the game will be wiped from the previous owner's XBone (hence the reason for required 24 hour online check ins) The rest of the article is quoting and discussing the two above articles from Major Nelson

Really lower than the Wii U?
#5odinlowejr88(Topic Creator)Posted 6/5/2013 5:21:05 PM(edited)
Ah, yah meant to put lower than the PS4 :p got in a bit of a hurry typing, will edit that. Thanks

EDIT: Also added to that spot the info about the hardware causing overheating

Not as low as the Wii U. I heard somewhere they were withdrawing the 24 hour check, but I don't have a source, and it didn't say what would replace it.

It happens that I saw another comment on IGN perfectly stated by RayMarioMan:

1. Forced online activation for all games. If Live servers are down or your internet is offline, you will be unable to activate and thus play your game.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/21/4352314/xbox-one-hard-drive-game-installs

2. Massive emphasis on TV, services and non game related focus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbWgUO-Rqcw&feature=youtu.be

3. Live TV services available in US only at launch, requires separate device

http://www.vg247.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-live-tv-available-in-us-only-at-launch-requires-separate-device/

4. No self publishing for indie devs, which is sad seeing the PS4 and Wii U both allow this, making their platform more open and easy to develop for.

http://www.oxm.co.uk/54746/indie-developers-cry-out-for-self-publishing-on-xbox-one/

5. No headset included, while PS4 comes with one and X360 came with one

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/02/21/ps4-bundled-with-headset-more-dualshock-4-details-revealed.aspx

and

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/05/23/turtle-beach-to-manufacture-headsets-for-xbox-one.aspx

6. Xbox One is not backwards compatible with the 360 games or accessories. Also no plans for future BC, PS4 has Gaikai plans to provide BC in the future.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/21/4350662/new-xbox-has-no-backwards-compatibilty

7. 8GB DDR3 confirmed instead of 8GB GDDR5. PS4 would be using the 8GB latter putting the XBO at a disadvantage.

http://www.videogamer.com/news/xbox_ones_8gb_ram_is_ddr3.html

8. Only 5GB of the 8GB ram will available for games to use.

http://www.examiner.com/article/xbox-one-ram-breakdown-5gb-for-games-3gb-for-os

9. Only HDMI for output. Not a huge concern but will shape some people's decision.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.408675-Xbox-One-Wont-Support-SDTVs

10. Kinect required to be plugged in and on for Xbox One to function.

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/05/21/microsoft-uk-xbox-one-wont-work-without-kinect.aspx

11. Non-replaceable Hard Drive. Hard Dive wont be able to be upgraded.

http://www.geek.com/games/xbox-one-hard-drive-cant-be-replaced-but-external-storage-supported-1556044/

12. Programming Issues on XBox One http://i.imgur.com/6Xi0c69l.png and http://i.imgur.com/aKRcKab.png

13. Kinect 2 might use visual DRM

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/24/xbox-one-will-kinect-2-use-visual-drm)

14. Microsoft's used game policy is very anti consumer. Lending and borrowing games will not be allowed unless a fee is paid (Fee is full price of game).

Only people allowed to sell used games will be Microsoft's partners. Meaning no Craigslist and no Ebay for games. Publishers will take a cut of used game sales and so will Microsoft, this will raise cost of used games (I would have been okay with publishers getting a cut but Microsoft also getting a cut is plain wrong as they neither created or sold the game)

15. PS4 has 50% more raw power than xbox one

http://gamer.blorge.com/2013/05/24/df-analysis-ps4-has-50-more-raw-power-than-xbox-one-microsoft-not-catering-to-highest-end-graphics/)
