So uh, did Microsoft ever provide an explanation for the name?

The all in one system is the reason despite it doesnt work without a TV..... or a cable box for a lot of features

For a serious answer: they said it's an "all in one" console. It's kinda their tagline.

No the all in one is either the PC or smart TV, if its all in one it would produce its own picture without another device and wouldnt need even more devices

My thoughts exactly. Samsung's Smart TV line of products better fits that description.
