Why does the Xbox One have mandatory game installs when the PS4 doesn't?

IGN's been updating this whenever something new is announced and only the Xbox One has mandatory installs. Why Microsoft? Do they want me to keep buying their stupid proprietary hard drives since I can't just switch an old one out with a new one like with the PS4?

Why doesn't PS4 have mandatory game installs? Why read data from the disc, which is so much slower than reading data from the hard drive, when you have a 500 gig HDD and you can play games while they install?

I guess it's because they like giving their consumers options instead of forcing them into something they might not want. They're optional on the PS4, and so are a bunch of other things.

No I wouldn't. Figure 15gb for games, 450 gigs usable space. That's 30 games installed at any one point. Or 25 games if you want to have some space for other stuff. Given the fact that you can play games while they install/download, I really don't see the issue.

Well one, you can't switch the hard drive so claiming they want you to buy their proprietary hard drives and replace them is irrelevant.

They said no external drives at launch but will quickly work on getting the feature put in (will probably happen in the first few months). Unless you plan on filling 500GB in under a year or so.

We have unlimited cloud storage.

PS4 has mandatory installs too, sorry to burst your bubble. Mark Cerny himself has stated this is the case in interviews as well as the articles below.

The PS4 does have mandatory game installation. They might not call it that. But that's what PlayGo does.
