Is this a mainly a cable box that does console gaming, or is it a gaming console that does cable?

This thread is meant for philosophical debates regarding this question.

Have at it!

The first TV commercial showed it functioning as a cablebox, therefore it is a cablebox.

Surely MS's influence on the product will sway its usefulness. First advert of the product focused completely on the cable side of things. Hmmmmmmmm.

Yes, how dare they advertise their NFL integration during an NFL match. What a stupid marketing team, trying to show a feature of their console that would appeal to the people they were showing it to. Utter stupidity.

Well considering it doesn't function as a cable box and you still need to have a cable box to get most of the tv features, I'd say it makes a pretty poor cable box.

Without Xbox Live Gold all it can do is play games and DVD/bluray movies, so gaming console.

Microsoft however sees it as an entertainment hub and are marketing it as such.

Most cell phone commercials don't show the user talking on the phone.
They show the features that make the device more than just a phone.
People already know a phone can make calls.

I'd say it's pretty bad if you don't intend to use it as a gaming device. You'd need to pay a subscription to use features or apps that are free on other devices.

What's an Ipad tc? This thing will or at least try to do it all... So it's a good thing in today's era. We "older folk" might not get it, but kids, teens, young adults won't be able to live without it.
