Has Japan become irrelevant for software sales?

Sales figures of last recorded week in Japan:

4 3DS Nobunaga's Ambition (3DS) 9,363
5 3DS Tomodachi Collection: Shin Seikatsu 9,071
6 3DS Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life 8,496

8 3DS Animal Crossing: Jump Out 7,690
9 PSP Kiniro no Corda 3 7,131
10 3DS Youkai Watch 6,886

Sales figures globally of the last recorded week:

1 X360 Grand Theft Auto V 8,880,006
2 PS3 Grand Theft Auto V 8,644,488
3 3DS Monster Hunter 4 462,995
4 PS3 Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 131,225
5 PS3 Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX 81,251
6 X360 Minecraft 64,426
7 X360 Madden NFL 25 55,680
8 PS3 The Last of Us 55,564
9 PS3 Madden NFL 25 45,391
10 PS3 Diablo III 37,932

This sort of weekly result is not an exception, it's actually a pretty common thing to see. Should the big 3 (sony, MS, Nintendo) focus less on making console games for Japan? Seems its an all handheld market over there.

Japan kind of has a capitalist economy.

Once you're a certain age you aren't expected to play videogames and stuff.

The place is crowded and the people are small.

Probably not a lot of room for livings rooms and houses packed with 18-30 year olds.

TC i too have always wondered this. why the big focus on Japan? even their best titles struggle against some of lesser known titles in america.

in nearly all cases a title released in Japan and America....American sales win hands down all the time.

aside from anime like games Im not really sure why people focus on Japan for gaming. Ive wondered it for a long time now. i do suspect though if we didnt focus on japan we would likely get nothing but sports, COD and GTA games so that might be why Japan gets focus as it gives a home and life to rarer more niche titles.

Japan never had big software or hardware sales

Japan focuses more on the handheld market while the West loves home consoles. May be because places like Tokyo are too crowded for them to waste living space for stuffs like PS4/XBox1/WiiU

GTA V is a AAA big budget game while sports games are being spent in huge budgets (most coming from EA).

Plus the other games that you mentioned doesn't exactly have to sell very well to make back the cost of making the games, because they're not exactly AAA games.

I fail to see how what you said is relevant to what I said.

Monster hunter will continue to sell well for a long time.

He said what he said. Japan software caters to a japanese market, unless it's like a dark souls or 3rd person shooter.
