How many games does $1,000,000 get you?

I was looking at the number and I realized that even though its a lot of money, really, its like just over a dozen games these days. Halo costed $30 million to make and another $30 million to market. x10 and thats already $600 million. So we are looking at roughly 20 games for $1 billion dollars?

Granted some games obviously don't cost anywhere near that amount (Crimson Dragon, Lococycle, Killer Instinct and Kinect Sports Rivals come to mind). Just surprised at how many games it might actually be. I remember the big retail titles on the SNES that costed... a dudes living expenses for a year? We could get probably 2000 SNES titles for like the price of 10 Xbox One titles. Its no wonder why indies are a growing trend.

Maybe companies should stop wasting their money on advertising.

The budget required for AAA games is getting outrageous, which is why indie games are on the rise. Exclusives are becoming less common because it simply doesn't make sense to not take advantage of the ease of porting a game and doubling the install base.

Quality over quantity all the way. Even though indies can be fun for a while

Still, people buy consoles for the triple A titles. I can play most indie games on my Mac Airbook...

I think anyone who thinks advertising is wasted money has no idea what they are talking about. If you don't spend the money on advertising, you may as well not have spent much on the game to begin with. Sales is mostly determined by how much you can show off your great game to the masses. You can make an amazing game but its gonna sell like crap if you are depending on the small hardcore base that goes to the forums or metacritics to decide.
