It's 2013 and nearly everyone has a HDTV by now. But what resolution is the average person's TV? 720p or 1080p?

I personally have a 1080p TV so it's unfortunate that most Xbone games do not run native 1080p. I thought that by now, 1080p would be standard issue for multimedia content. Even my smartphone outputs 1080p...

Do most people not have 1080p TVs or something?

I actually did not own a tv capable of 1080p until last year when I upgraded to a new Sony 60" led. It does make a huge difference from my older set. For gaming, I just upgraded to a 1080p 50" led this past July 4th and I think my current 360 games look great on the set. As long as my games on the One look that good I will be fine.

No. 1080p is a secret that only you, me, and anyone else reading this knows about.

Fact: The "average consumer" not only can't tell the difference a million more pixels makes, they don't even know such an option exists.

Apparently.

The real joke of 1080p TV's is how Blu Ray and PC are really the only source of 1080p content, aside from smaller downloadable games. The cable companies and video game consoles have been stuck at 720p the whole time.

As a matter of fact, the pixels in these posts are entirely unreadable to the kind of people who would dare own less than 1080p capable tv. They just see us talking about sports.

Anyone below 720 just thinks we're discussing string theory.

ikr
that's why 4k is such a joke to me...there is absolutely no reason to go 4k anytime soon 1080p is not even the standard...the only time you can really enjoy it is on Blu-ray...which is a shame...what a waste

1080i was possible on the original xbox...and through all of these upgrades they STILL can't push 1080p? wtf is going on

They have to balance the resolution against framerate while having a significant number of things happening independently onscreen.
