Why is the Xbox One so ridiculously huge compared to PS4?

Are they not supposed to have, more or less, the same kind of specs?

Seriously, look at this,

I think it is a stylistic choice at this point.

That pic is completely accurate for the shot of that side, but also a bit misleading. The PS4 is not nearly as tall as the X1, but it is a bit wider. The X1 is more a rectangular shape, where PS4 is closer to a square shaped. But yes, it is a bit smaller.

So, since it's smaller and has an internal PSU, the PS4 is either going to have a higher powered fan, run a bit hotter, or be a bit louder. Or, it was superbly designed. One advantage of the X1 being so large is that it can probably run much quieter.

But we'll have to wait until both come out to see from reviews.

I would agree with this. Sony has been developing hardware (tvs, game systems, hand held devices) for many many years. They know what they can do and where they should worry about heating problems, if any are to exist. MS is a software company, so they lack the experience in building hardware optimally.

The fan in the PS4 is supposed to be be pretty nifty...

"How loud is the PS4 system when it is running?
The PS4 systemís cooling system is optimized for living room use and is generally much quieter than the PS3 systemís. The PS4 system features a stepless speed fan system that will smoothly increase the speed of the fans as needed. As with all game consoles, itís important to keep the PS4 system in an environment with plenty of air circulation."

Having a stepless fan will mean that the ps4 will not have to wait for the system to reach certain temperatures before moving up an RPM to cool the board further. So where standard fans will have a step up temperature at (say) 50degrees they will not speed up if the system is running at a steady 49. However the PS4 can increase & decrease the fan speed to cool the chipset seamlessly if running at 10 through to 100degrees.

*Disclaimer, the numbers are just used for example purposes.
