X1 biggest competition won't be PS4, it will be iPhone/Pads.

I have been reading up on some new things going on with Apple. One very interesting thing is that the new iOS 7 has an API for game controllers. Also apple is now allowing 3rd party manufacturing of game controllers. Logitech and a few other manufactures already are working on controllers for the iPad/Phone that adhere to standards set forth by apple.

Another very important aspect to the future of gaming on apple devices is a new standard for wi-fi connection. It's called Wi-Fi protocol 802.11ac. This new standard can reportedly stream 4K video seamlessly. This is important for displaying what is on your iPad to your TV. Apple already has something called air play that lets you display a game on your iPad to your TV threw the apple TV device but it has been know to suffer from lag. This new wi-fi standard could eliminate that problem.

As far as specs go, yes an iPad won't be as powerful as the PS4 or X1 but that gap will get smaller and smaller as the years go on. Current iPads can already handle games like grand theft auto 3. The truth is that most of these 'mobile' games have been simple because of the interface (touch screen) not lack of hardware power.

So in lets say in 2-3 years a person can sync a controller to their iPad, sync their iPad to their TV and start playing grand theft auto 5. This seriously starts to eliminate the need for a dedicated gaming console. I think this could represent a much bigger problem for the X1 than the PS4 does.

Obviously android is offering similar things now and in the future as well. The Wii U, PS4 and X1 may be the last generation of dedicated gaming consoles.

Do you have any idea why people game on their iphones? Hint: it's because they're in a place where there is absolutely nothing else to do, like the waiting room of a doctor's office.

.... I was talking mostly about future technologies that can make an iPad or iPhone a home gaming console played on your TV.....

Again I ask, did you read any of it?

These are not things currently available on the market but will be in the next year or 2.

Why wouldn't you suggest Windows tablets rather than iPad? They are farther along in this area, there is much more innovation going on with them and they already work with a X360 controller. But it's still not going to happen that tablets replace consoles in the next 5 years. Have you seen the install size of next gen games? You'd need a $1,000+ tablet to get something with enough memory to store a few games and that's just at 1080p. There would also be too much lag in wireless streaming to be reliable for gaming.

I was really just using Apple stuff as an example, yes windows/android tablets apply as well. Also I addressed this streaming issue. The new wi-fi standard coming in the next few years should easily be able to handle streaming games. As for storage size again, I'm not saying your current iPad will be able to play the latest AAA title like say Forza 5. I'm saying that over the next couple of years these tablet devices are going to get better and better at supporting a more traditional 'hardcore' gaming experience.

I really think in 3 or 4 years sony and MS will both have a hard time convincing someone to buy a dedicated gaming device if their current tablet can already function as a gaming console.

There are already games coming to tablets that are looking more and more like what PC/console gamers consider 'real' games. Here is a link to a good example of this:

I think they're better off just having the next Apple TV support apps and then have controllers avaiable or the option to use your iPhone/pad. If they can do that and keep the price down
