MS had planned this for long time, but they didn't expect this coming!

So basically this thing should sell to the former Wii casual fanbase. Problem solved.

Problem is that crowd won't suddenly pay $500 for a console.

I don't think that it is catered to that demographic at all. Also, the big problem with the Wii was that so many people never bought that many games and were simply content with Wii Sports and thus had a poor attach rate.

Let us also not forget that comparably, this console isn't that much more expensive than the 360 when it launched when taking inflation into account.

I think that this is catered to the same people that buy things like tablets and smart phones en masse without blinking an eye.

Good post and for the most part I agree. The one point of contention I'd bother listing is with your first point- MS actually planned this "taking over the living room" thing when they conceived the xbox original. This wasn't a decision made halfway into this gen.

It has always been my opinion that the kinetic and the ps move have been cash grabs after seeing the casuals buy up the Wii. It has also been my opinion that this would be a fad. MS making the kinetic mandatory IMO is a clinging factor in hopes the casuals believe it's not a fad so their system would sell more than the big N or Sony. It was a business move to capture a market that may or may not succeed. Also IMO motion controls at this point is like the Macarena (sp?) and as such is best forgotten about.

Nice post.

What's your take on the whole no-used games on the xbox1? Microsoft thought it could pull it off on the average consumer? Or was it just pressure from the developers to improve their income?

the thing about the multimedia features of the xbox one is that if they can actually pull it off it's going to be really cool and people will want it in their house no matter what it costs. because the thing is that game consoles aren't really that exciting anymore. you've seen them before. they play games. thats not interesting to everybody. what will interest people is these cool sports and tv features IF they're really that good. people haven't really seen them so its hard to say. but it WILL draw people to the xbox one if they're good. the ps4 really just plays games. and people who thats all they want will probably buy ps4 but those are the only people who will buy it. they won't really attract or expand the gaming market at all but they can definitely control it.

While "true" gamers generally hate the focus moving from games to other forms of media, the mass market is a much larger revenue stream. I don't have a problem with MS including that stuff, as long as they don't sacrifice games to do it. I have never watched a DVD or Netflix in any Xbox 360 I've owned, or used it as a media hub, etc. I just don't care. I have a really good laptop for that stuff.

MS wanted to lay the chains on the consumers with their DRM box so they could rake in more money. As with KI pay for more players? That is the end of story.

Promising power of the cloud, trading virually, their entertainment box was nothing more than a pipe dream. But as 90% of the functions were and are behind the paywall. You still have to pay to play.

They never payed attention to the past fates of "Your one entertainment option" like 3DO, CDI, Lasersctive among others.

There was never any good in the old XBone. All put together to limit your options, take your money, and that's it.

And the Kinect, yeah well MS promises they won't spy on you with it. Honest. So take it at that.
