Last I heard PS4 only cost $381 to manufacture...so they are profiting somewhat - especially compared to the losses of the PS3.

That's nice of Walmart and Bestbuy to sell PS4's without taking a cut from them. Here I was thinking retailers were taking atleast $100, leaving sony with around $300 to recoup costs....

No, retailers make money on the extra stuff like game time cards, controllers, other things

and a few bucks on games and consoles

Where did this dollar figure come from? Is it confirmed to be factual or is it just a(n educated?) guess?

Just a guess from the tear downs, it's fairly accurate tho, it's not like some bro on a website did it

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/teardown-reveals-xbox-one-costs-90-more-than-ps4-to-make/1100-6416404/

It's from a research firm, which can be wrong but most of the time they're correct or they wouldn't be in business

I see. So for all we know, Microsoft could have gotten a huge discount on some of the parts?

All Microsoft had to do to make the xboner cheaper is make the kinect an option rather than the law of the land.

This meshes pretty well with their current business strategy of forcing consumers to change rather than change to match the needs of the consumer, like the removal of the start menu in Windows 8, and the subsequent removal of the way to remove the Metro UI nobody wanted without an external program.

Nope. For example, the hardware of the 3DS cost $104 yet at the time, Nintendo claimed that it was selling at a loss at $170. That's $64 in storecut, on something that's $170. How much do think it would be on a $400 and $500 system? Note that Walmart doesn't care how much money Sony and MS make.

What about the ps4's hardware makes it superior over the Xbox One's? Is it only the RAM? Or does it have better graphics card or something?

It's GPU is 50% stronger. Though some have said up to 66%. GPU is graphics card

As others have pointed out, it's the Kinect. MS spent billions and billions of dollar in research and development for that damn spyware that tracks your entire life. The console itself is cheap as hell. It's literally made of Chinese newspaper. But the Kinect...........a ton of money was poured into that thing man. You can find videos on them working on the technologies they've put into it.
