If you want something cool and have the budget for it, this is my next purchase:

So people trolling get replies instantly yet people with genuine questions don't? such a helpful board.

Don't be that guy...

Yeah, exactly.

I have spent a lot of time on the 360 boards and have/will be on the Xbox One boards for topics specifically about technical setups and problems, especially audio and networking. Kind of a rude thing to say that the board isn't helpful.

Onkyo audio equipment rocks. I love my Denon, but this is definitely where I'm going next.

Info dump

Optical only supports 5.1 Dolby Digital

HDMI supports 7.1 Dolby TrueHD/DTS HD (HD lossless audio)

Any High speed HDMI cable supports Dolby True HD/DTS HD with 3d. (Atm xbone/ps4 do not support 3d playback and ps3 3d only supports 2 channel audio.)

For 7.1
Console -> Old receiver -> TV all via hdmi. Using the console to decode your receiver will show L/PCM.

Console -> New receiver -> TV all via hdmi. Your receiver does the decoding and the DtHD/DTSHD indicators will light up. The result is the same as above, HD lossless audio.

7.1 with 3d gets tricky.
Assuming X1/ps4 gets 3d play back with 7.1 or you have a dedicated 3d Blu-ray player.

You'll need are receiver that can pass through 3d or a TV and receiver that both have ARC (audio return channel) ARC is an hdmi feature that allows back and forth audio signals between devices.

3d player -> 3d receiver -> 3d tv
3d player -> 3d TV with ARC -> receiver with ARC.

This is all good info - I will just say though; most high end BluRay players nowadays have dual HDMI outputs, to get around older receivers that don't support 3D passthrough.
