Is there a distinction between people you follow and your friends?

I can't seem to find any distinction on the friends list. If there is truly no distinction, how do you know if someone has accepted your friend request?

There's no friend request anymore on Xbox One.

If you are interested in playing games with someone, you friend them. They appear on your friend's list and you see their activity.

On their side, they see you show up as a follower. If they also are interested in what you are doing, they add you as a friend and you get promoted to their friend's list. Otherwise, you remain in their list of followers (which is unlimited, I believe).
