Creators of Max and the Curse of Brotherhood have secrets to share

It's yet another addition to Microsoft's burgeoning list of secret projects, which include a free-to-play AAA title based on a "successful" first party IP, an untitled stealth endeavour from Black Tusk Studios, a game from Gunslinger developer Twisted Pixel, and a number of free-to-play titles from Microsoft's Lift London studio.

Speaking to OXM earlier this week, Press Play's lead artist Lasse Jacob Middlebo Outzen was able to share little about the studio's unannounced projects, but did mention in passing that the developer has been in contact with Lift London, to unknown end.

A bit of very sketchy insight from me: Max and the Curse of Brotherhood is aesthetically reminiscent of a Pixar-ish zombie tech demo shown by Lift London boss Lee Schuneman at the Develop conference this year. It's clearly a different product, but the two studios do seem to have a certain amount of artistic DNA in common.

According to PR materials, Press Play has "full creative control of its projects" despite being owned by Microsoft. The developer specialises in "original mechanics-driven game experiences for geeks, moms, and other extraordinary people".

It's also in the habit of making games that aren't about combat. "I think it's changing, actually," Outzen commented when I asked for his thoughts on the prevalence of violent shooters, action games and the like. "I think the whole indie scene has done quite a lot to move the industry away from that. I think a lot of the big players are realising that as well.

"I don't think it's necessary any more, and I think a lot of gamers are attracted to gamers like this. A lot of the big players have been too focused on guns for quite a long time."

Speaking to OXM earlier this year, studio co-founder Mikkel Thorsted shed a bit of light on the circumstances of Press Play's acquisition. "Microsoft was after people who could do unique content and make weird games, but it also needed a team that wasn't huge, that hadn't made breakout hits," he told us. "Because they would be [expensive]! It was looking for a team with the potential to make weird stuff. We were one of the very few. A perfect match."

Let's hope we hear more soon.

the bitter truth is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. ~ Anton Ego

Xbone fanboys are weird little irrational creatures. It's fun making them contradict themselves.
