From the sound of things it wasn't ever more than a tech demo. I can't find the article, but I read something about it never really being on the table for potential release.

Kinect is only part of it. You also need a projector to project the illumiroom features. It just isn't financially viable to implement. You would have a lower attach rate and it's much more dependent on space then Kinect alone.

Isn't this the thing that will charge you a license fee for every person who is watching a movie with you?
Though the XBOX 360 is good in theory, it's hardware limitations say otherwise - Hideo Kojima

Illumiroom was a "smoke and mirrors" marketing ploy by Microsoft last Spring to make consumers believe the tech would be installed on the Xbox One, and throw off discussions about "rumored" negative aspects of the console such as DRM and internet only requirements. The device was never going to be anything more than a tech demo, and Microsoft knew this. The equipment reportedly cost up to $10,000 to create what was seen in the video. A scaled down home version was rumored to be no less than $1,000 to $2,000.

Yes this is that tech I was speaking of. Nobody is going to want this.
