What advantage is there to having a non replaceable hard drive?

I can't figure this out, you get a 500gb hard drive with the system, the size of games are what, 40-50gb, and seeing this new 13gb Dead Rising patch which some think is one of the FOUR DLC packs coming out for just one game has me wondering why there is no little removable tray to put a bigger hard drive in the system. I get that at some point you can use a external hard drive but how would that in any way be preferable to putting a new one in the system where you don't have to see or look at it or deal with more wires?

So you weren't gaming last gen?

The PS3 was able to upgrade to a larger HDD. That's great! No really! Wonderful! But If you install a lot of games, one single HDD is never enough. The Xbox 360 and eventually the Xbox One will allow for installing to external HDD.

if you're going all digital this gen, lol @ 1TB.

There's not really one but if you don't want to replace the OS hard drive every year or 2 external has its advantages.

You could just as well ask why consoles don't have extra HDD slots aside from the built in.

cheechmooster is your next question going to be what the advantage of the Xbox 360 having memory cards and the PS3 not having that option going to be? Because it's a related issue.

this was not done by accident so what could be the motive behind this power move microsoft made to put a dinky non replaceable 500gb hard drive in a console they had planned on being all or mostly digital.

Microsoft probably had their 'own' external HDD available in the works

$200+

Remember when the 360 came out and the absolute extortion that went on with their farty little hard drives? Yeah, they probably had that in mind for this wonderful open your wallet machine.
