They should have put that billion into building first party studios from the ground up and making new and exciting IPs... Instead they are dead set to pay for competitor exclusion. It's a shame because it's incredibly short sighted IMO

Billions already went into building more studios since 2008. This is why MS has 50% more first parties than Sony.

The much bigger difference is their 2nd parties.

In the first 12 months MS has 1st party *retail* exclusives from:

Crytek
Capcom
Insomniac Games
Playground Games
Frontier Developments
Double Helix
Remedy Entertainment

To follow

Ruffian
Cloudgnine
Epic Games
Whoever is making the Japanese exclusives

Sony has:

Ready at Dawn

To follow

Quantic Dream.

And no. MS did not spend 1/4 Billion on TF. They could buy Respawn outright for less than 40 Million

Learn what a first party developer is. Crytek, Capcom, Insomniac, Frontier, and Epic are not first party.

Games published by Microsoft are first party.

I call the above 2nd party developers.

Games are not first party nor second party when it is done by a third party developer. MS publishing has nothing to do with it.

So if Microsoft publishes a game on their own platform they are a third party?

How does that work?

They just bought timed or permanent exclusivity. They are still considered a third party game. Third party exclusive and third party multiplat.

Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden are two examples of MS published third party games.
