The Cloud

What exactly is the cloud? Why did people expect it to be so powerful? Why did it not meet expectations? Will it meet expectations? I understand that it involves storing data and servers, but what else?

Playing PvZ (on EA servers) after playing the Titanfall beta (on MS Azure servers) has me completely sold on cloud servers.

In meteorology, a cloud is a visible mass made of water droplets or various chemicals suspended in the atmosphere above the surface of a planet. Cloud formation is the result of air in Earth's atmosphere becoming saturated due to two processes:

1. Cooling of the air
2. Adding water vapor.

With enough saturation, precipitation, or rain, will begin to return to the planet to begin the cycle again.

In a perfect world, the cloud has the ability to be everything Microsoft has promised it to be and more. The fact of the matter is, however, not enough people have the ability to effectively utilize it in any meaningful way. To be able to enhance the hardware beyond it's determined output, you would need to have a consistently strong connection to a fast internet connection with completely unlimited bandwidth capacity, something the majority of the world does not have at the moment (even major population areas in America are looking toward having bandwidth caps placed on their services). The face that companies like Sony and Microsoft are pushing for all-digital distribution when having 20 or 40 GB caps could completely ruin everything. Streaming something like Azure consistently over your network while playing a game like Destiny wouldn't stand a chance with those limitations.
