The Xbox One could one day make use of a powerful rendering technique called "real-time ray-tracing," an advanced system used to achieve photorealistic lighting effects. Microsoft Studios executive Phil Spencer has confirmed that internal tests are already underway.

he doesn't know what he's talking about. But Carmack does. You need more than "realistic lighting" to achieve "photo realistic graphics". "Ray tracing" has been around for years, especially on PC. John Carmack went into high detail in a long presentation at Quake con in 2013.

Here it is, if you have 90 minutes to soak this in later. Bethesda warns this is extremely technical as well. So prepare your brains. I forgot at which point he talks about ray tracing. You'll have to watch all of it lol.

whenever someone brings up cloud computer for graphic quality, I wonder why humans have devolved to the point they have to talk about things they have no knowledge of.

True photo realistic gaming isn't worth the processing power yet, any product that fully persues it, tends to drop a lot of gameplay to try and make such a small leap that it's not worth it.

The people who modded Grand Theft Auto 4 PC to be completely photorealstic (at like 15 FPS) kind of astound me, the graphics can put anything the Xboxone or Ps4 will ever achieve, because it's just too much resource cost to make the jump up.

ah keep making realistic games because ur artistic qualities and creativity lacks terribly

When ANY developer comes out and says they've found out how to actually use Cloud for this purpose then MS can brag about it. Kojima thought he was going to be able to do this with MGS5 and look how that turned out for the Xbone, it barely looks any different than the PS3/360 versions.

The cloud's bandwidth limit (Average user connection) makes it a terrible choice to put any kind of graphical output on, it works for Ai, because it can allow for more "adjusted" Intelligence (Modifying the ai daily is a great trick to make it seem more human and random), but Cloud computing graphical power is a drop in the ocean compared to just having an up to date Graphics processor in your units.

Xbone will have photorealistic graphics though

thats why they are pushing those live action segments in their games. They can claim photorealistic graphics with that

So an MS representative tells you that this system will potentially bring better visuals and that MS is testing the system, and suddenly he has no idea what he is talking about? Really? He literally just stated facts.

He didnt even claim photorealistic graphics like your title implies...nobody did. The author of the article said photorealistic lighting...not graphics, and that has nothing to do with Spencer or the tweet. And nobody said this technology is new or revolutionary...just that its advanced.

This is just another pathetic attempt to exaggerate and discredit someone stating facts solely because they are affiliated with MS. At least try to read and address the article next time.

Don't discount the Cloud! I guess the guy at gamespot doesn't know better either.

The rendering technique would, however, be yet another computational effort for the Xbox One, but it's possible Microsoft could offload that process to its vast network of cloud-powered servers.

Hey look, lets all hate on MS for trying to do something interesting. Lets hate on MS for taking chances. Lets hate on MS for giving us links of interesting tidbits to read. Wow what a bunch of *** holes at MS trying to do new and different things. Lets grab the pitchforks and torches and burn the village down.

Are you mad? Read. He said "photorealistic rendering" There are no facts here. Just PR spin from Spencer.

Try watching the 90 min Carmack presentation before jumping the gun. he knows what he's talking about. Spencer and Major nelson do not.
