So, could anyone possibly explain what this update will do to a less technologically savvy person?

Funny topic. The notion that DX12 can boost the hardware performance to a point of making it better than more advanced hardware is just ridiculous. Anyone believing this nonsense doesn't have any idea how these things work.

DX12 is quickly becoming Microsoft's blast processing.

Optimization will happen like last gen. It will not however make up for the lack in hardware power. It will help, yes. Just don't think it will some how exceed it's bottlenecks.

Before the Xbox released and any game information was leaked the Xbox One was supposed to be able to play games at 1080p @ 60 FPS. Take this with a grain of salt people.

It already does that though.

More PR nonsense, you'd have thought they'd have learnt their lesson by now.

AMD, Nvidia, Epic Games, Microsoft and everyone else all have the same PR?

The Difference between Consoles and PC's
this is nonsense for the consoles but makes a lot of sense for PC games.

Funny how two of those companies are pushing for far more support of OpenGL than DirectX in the PC scene. (Which will flow over to consoles eventually) This whole DirectX 12 seems like a reactionary measure against more OpenGL adoption and Mantle. Going to be interesting and fun to see DirectX get pushed aside more and more on the PC front.

DirectX should've died a long time ago, it adopted anything OpenGL did, the only innovation is brought was with DirectX 11.2 tiled resources, i've been told on openGL that it uses its own version of tiled resources from ages ago but it doesn't make that much of a difference not like the hype MS gave it.. Very few are native tho. Huge difference there that most will deny.

Numbers aside, fanboys need to realize these DX12 announcements are pretty redundant to Xbox One. Xbox One, just like all previous Xbox's have run a heavily modified version of Direct X. This is no different with DX12. Also all these GFlops and TFlops numbers mean nothing without a good overhead on memory bandwidth. Memory bandwidth will always be what holds the Xbox One back and that is a hardware issue. It cannot be fixed with firmware updates. Ultimately I don't believe this will make any difference graphically between the consoles once developers learn the respective consoles.

That's not true. You can never use 100% of the hardware because the software is forever changing. Saving nano seconds per
Process boosts performance in itself. As for memory bottlenecks that can be overcome with software optimization. That is why just about every sequel to a game is an improvement of its predecessor without changing the hardware.

It's not magic, it's software evolution.

Yup. The kiddies eat up this Tiled Resources like it is some weapon only available to DirectX. MS does have good PR spin. I do give them that.

I'm surprised to see you still pontificating on issues related to APIs as you have clearly been shown to be clueless in such matters. This contribution only deepens our confidence in your ineptitude. Feel free to post such reassuring blabber on the PS4 boards, but it's not going to go unchallenged here. Anyone who paid attention to yesterday's presser or took the time to read about it knows DX12 is not a kneejerk move on MS' part.
