Did Microsoft pull off a SONY 2006?

In one aspect, no. Not even close. But in another, yes.

1) Sony went for some crazy arch that was powerful but a major pita. X1 isn't close to that. Major cocky move from Sony expecting devs to just work it out like that.

2) Not a very new format that was obviously very expensive, but it was a cheap alternative all things considered:

http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/all-blu-ray-players-bow-to-the-playstation-3/

"The problem is that, excluding some very minor differences, all the Blu-ray players I've seen offer essentially the same picture quality. That's a problem because the 20GB PlayStation 3 retails for $500, which is $800 less than the Panasonic DMP-BD10 and around $400 less than the Philips BDP9000. Even with eBay inflation, we're seeing the 20GB PS3 go for $600."

"Even if you look past the price difference, the arguments for buying a PS3 instead of current Blu-ray players are overwhelming. "

More in, won't link that.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/PS3-No-Longer-Cheapest-Blu-ray-Player

"It has long been the hallowed Sony marketing statement to justify the price of the PlayStation 3: it is the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market. "

Definitely not "overpricing the system " when it was the cheapest on the market just for that. In this aspect, Sony took a major loss from only one aspect of the system. MS isn't even close to taking that much of a hit, making that a cocky move from them.

Well, if you're going to site R&D costs and other such factors, then you have to recognize that Microsoft has more money to spend on those items than Sony does. Microsoft isn't facing possible bankruptcy after all.

It's funny that every time one of these debates start that people use the "Microsoft spent $$ on R&D" as though Sony's R&D was funded through charity. They have similar costs and far less capital to invest in those costs. Microsoft (worth $70 billion) could quite literally buy Sony (worth $18.6 billion) as a whole several times over while Sony would have to sell more divisions just to have the cash to buy the Xbox division.

LMFAO. Just because Microsoft has a lot of money, doesn't mean that they'll continue to put most of it towards the Xbox brand if it doesn't make back a good return on the investment. And throughout the Original Xbox, Xbox 360, & now with Xbox One, it simply hasn't.

If anything, their investors will most likely force Microsoft to either spin-off the Xbox brand, or to get rid of it if they either take more losses off of each Xbox One console being sold, or if the sales numbers continues to be a big disappointment.

And under Japanese law, foreign companies just can't simply own Japanese companies or anything that they have.

Point = missed

Oh, and Microsoft has gone on record that the Xbox division is receiving full corporate support and will not be sold or dissolved any time soon.

Of course they said that did you expect them to say they are thinking of selling? No company would say that unless they are stupid. Also lets no pretend like Microsoft has never lied or stretched the truth.

This. It's PR speak. You can't believe every word a company says.
