Why do people think DX12 will make a difference?

Microsoft always hypes up their new versions of directx and, in reality, there's very little difference between each new version compared to the previous version. They pushed DX10 harder than any directx version before (probably to try to convince people to buy Vista even though XP could have run it perfectly fine) and all it offered was a small handful of graphical effects (most of which barely mattered) that weren't possible in DX9 and a tiny bump in performance in certain games. That was the reality of the matter, but do you want to see the fantasy Microsoft created around DX10?

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?174373-M-compares-Crysis-to-Halo1-as-a-DX10-to-DX9-comparison!!!

Yeah, that's right. Their marketing department tried to claim that DX10 would result in a graphical leap from Halo: Combat Evolved graphics to Crysis graphics. It was beyond absurd. In reality, Crysis ran extremely well in DX9 and unless you compare it under a microscope, there was virtually no graphical improvement in Crysis by running it in DX10 as opposed to DX9 (with the tweak to unlock the DX10 "exclusive" effects). Heck, even today most games that still support DX9 show little to no improvement compared to running them in DX11 with few exceptions.

In short, this is Microsoft being Microsoft. Will DX12 be an improvement over DX11? Probably. Will it be much to write home about? Almost certainly not because previous directx upgrades never made much of a difference either. Anyone expecting a "doubling" of performance is kidding themselves (expect, at best a 5-10% boost like previous new versions of directx). And this is coming from a PC gamer who couldn't care less about the "console war". What worries me is that Microsoft will make DX12 a W8 exclusive in order to strong arm gamers into "upgrading" their OS.

I don't think you quite understand the comparison they're making. They're comparing a game MADE for DX9 vs a game MADE for DX10...not a game MADE for DX 9 RAN through DX10.

Does it really matter that people who enjoy talking about games and technology are enjoying talking about something new? I mean how is this a bad thing? Should everyone just hold their heads down 24/7 and just HATE everything around them all the time? If that's the case, I think we should all just stop discussing everything in general and let the board die completely.

downloading DirectX 12 will make my 7 year old computer the equivalent of one built today.

Sorry but it doesn't work like that

DX12 is just another damage control from Microsoft

It's all turned into a massive joke with gamers.

WRONG.

I've seen plenty of comparisons and even compared it myself by playing the game a lot on XP and then trying it out again when I upgraded to w7. There is virtually no difference. Some of the effects under water look slightly better and the lighting is marginally improved but there's not much to it at all. What you're probably thinking of is how running the game in DX9 caps the graphics settings at high while DX10 allows you to select very high. But that lock out was purely arbitrary and with a simple .ini mod you can enable very high settings in DX9. Look for yourself.

You forgot that dx10 screencap has 30fps while that dx11 screencap has 15fps.

latest dx versions are only good if its combined with a latest GPU.
