Q: Does the console have to be on when I watch TV?
A: Yes, only if it is passing through the X1.

Q: Can it DVR on its own?
A: Not sure what you mean. The X1 isn't a DVR. Your DVR will record your shows wether or not the X1 is on. Doesn't even matter if you're playing a game or watching Netflix.

As a gamer I've never seen the point of the pass through for this very reason... Have to leave your xbox on to use it.

For that reason alone, when I eventually get an X1, I will not be using the HDMI pass through.
Searching for my long lost twin, is this you?

This.

I'm out of ports (5 devices with only 4 slots) due to my Cable, Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and PC. I just unplug a console randomly as its not that often. I don't want to run my Xbox One for television unless it didn't require a cable box. No need to run both honestly.

As a gamer I've never seen why anyone would want to pass up the ease of use of having your cable run through your Xbox One. Being able to jump over to the basketball game between matches on Twitch is absolutely fantastic. Controlling my TV with voice is fantastic. Realizing there's nothing on and watching Netflix without doing anything is fantastic.
