So when did selling a million units make a game a failure?

When devs saw Call of Duty and decided every single game should be just as popular with the masses, sell just as many copies, and yet cost one hundred times more than the CoD titles take to develop.

And then all of a sudden it's, "Oh, s***! How did our niche stealth genre franchise that we decided to turn into an action game not sell twelve million on release week?!"

The "niche" franchise of MGS escaped that market when the game hit 6million on PS1 about a decade before CoD started it's 10s of millions in sales numbers.

So when budgets started getting much bigger.

Eh...

I wouldn't say that TR sold bad, it's just that Square-Enix is a total ass nowadays wanting to get 10+ million in the first few days due to FF and KH selling insane amounts of BS.

Frogger sold millions on the PS1. Those were awesome times, but they're gone now.

Plus, I didn't realise this topic was in regards to Ground Zeroes, and so I just picked a niche genre like stealth for my example.

And I was thinking more along the lines of Hitman or Thief.

The "times" have moved on for Frogger not MGS. Metal Gear has not been a niche series for decades. Nor is the stealth genre niche now. MGS is a franchise is still expected to,sell in the millions on a single platform.

You can keep trying to move the standard bar all you like but the trends/popularity are not fickle or transient to change upon each game release.
