Can someone give examples if what the DX12 update will improve?

#1known2FAILPosted 5/6/2014 5:43:55 AM
I don't dully understand the benefit. Obviously it's going to do something fantastic for the console but I'm ignorant. What are the known improvements outside of 1080p? Will we be able to install our games twice as fast? If we download digital copies will this effect download speeds or is that completely dependent on internet speeds? How will this effect actual on game play? Just faster load times for games or is there more to it?

Thanks for the answers!

DX12 isn't going to give you 1080p

Long post. You know how companies hype up their products by taking best case scenarios? Those are taken and are represented as standard case. For example Mantle (similar to DX12) was massively hyped with big numbers - 200% increase! 300%! - bla bla bla. AMD game changer etc. Starswarm demo (2-3x), or the "45%" BF4 demo:

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2014/01/09/amd-mantle-battlefield-4-demo-show-45-perfo/1

http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/175881-amd-mantle-benchmarked-the-biggest-innovation-in-gaming-since-directx-9/2

http://wccftech.com/amd-mantle-powered-nitrous-engine-star-swarm-benchmark-released-steam/

"CPU-limited scenario: 319% (1080p) and 281% (1600p) performance improvement in the “RTS” test on Extreme settings with the AMD A10-7700K and an AMD Radeon R9 290X."

That is not representative for all games whatsoever. What actually happens is it massively relieves CPU bottlenecks, allowing the GPU to get on with its thing. So, common situations like:

1) GPU massively outclasses CPU

2) Lower resolutions - e.g. 720p will be CPU bottlenecked much more than 2560x1440.

3) Low multi-core support (1/2 cores).

Look at what real life results are:

http://www.techspot.com/review/793-thief-battlefield-4-mantle-performance/page2.html

Nothing close to 45% in BF4. Notice how it becomes less effective going from the very powerful 290X to the 260X (keep in mind the 260X is more powerful than the X1's GPU/similar to PS4, slightly more powerful). Also note how in Thief, which is more CPU dependant (BF4 has pretty good multicore support, Thief less so afaik), the gains are much greater:

http://www.techspot.com/review/787-thief-benchmarks/page4.html

For the consoles, devs already are using lots of threads (I:SS, K:SF presentations for example show this). They don't need much help using all the cores. They're obviously not perfect and they'll learn to use them better in the coming years but that's not an area where you'll suddenly see huge gains. They aren't stupid - "oh wow how about we use all the cores of the CPU to make our games better!!!!?!?!?" - imagine that. They already have low level tools, they already have great access to the hardware ("devs can code to the metal" sound familiar?). The potential gains are probably better on PC. In fact, with MS' "greater focus" on PC or whatever it was then Dx12 was revealed a few months later. I think somewhere in a dx12 thing it says to become more "console like" - in reference to lower level PC control.

As an answer to all your questions except #1, no.

lmao MS is king at increasing the power of their console through articles and spin...I swear with the power of the cloud, the extra 5% of processing power taken from the Kinect, and now DX12...they have people believing their console is getting more powerful with each article

the fact is...this si the same thing that rolled off of the assembly line June 2013

DX12 will make making games more efficient...it just makes the process easier

MS preys on people ignorance to promote their product...I know that "The Cloud" is a PR spin word for Servers...but when you say server people go brain dead because it sounds technically daunting...so apple came out with cloud...so now things like uploading and downloading make sense...

MS had fanboys running around saying that the power of the server would make the XB1 more powerfull smh

Seriously I wish they would just cut the crap and cater to their customers... it's really pathetic and shameful...it's make me feel ashamed that the brand I chose is a bunch of liars and cheats...

"One downside to using DirectX 12 on graphics cards that so far relied on DirectX 11 is that they’ll be “pushed twice as hard as previously,” generating more heat in the process."

That doesn't sound too good. RROD incoming?
