GPU question on Triangle Rate and Vertex Rate for Xbox One

#1soniccloudPosted 5/6/2014 2:03:15 PM
Hey guys, got a GPU question for the Xbox One here.

I have some confusions over the reported triangle rate and vertex rate of the Xbox One. I keep seeing that the triangle rate and the vertex rate are both 1.6 GTri/s and 1.6 vert/s. But conceptually that doesn't make sense to me as vertex rate should always be higher than triangle rate. Maybe this has to do with the architecture of the Xbox One? Or maybe it is just the way Microsoft measures the triangle rate as there is no standardized process of measuring triangle rate in the industry.

Here are some of the sources that I was looking at (I'm assuming they're all coming from the same source though)

And for comparison sake, PS4's vertex rate which number makes more sense to me.

Can anyone explain to me why the numbers are the same for vertex rate and triangle rate for the Xbox One?

Thanks for your time!

Xbone tri/setup is 1.78B. 1.6 is from before the clock increase.

I'd guess the PS4's vertex rate is wrong because there's no source for his claims.

That's true the PS4 may not be the most credible source. Though even if triangle rate is ~1.7, I still don't understand how vertex rate can be so low, since drawing a triangle takes multiple vertexes. From that point view, vertex rate should definitely be higher. For instance (I don't have the sources on me at the moment),

Xbox 360
Triangle Rate: 0.5Gtri/s
Vertex Rate: 1.0 Gvert/s

Xbox
Triangle Rate: 0.029 Gtri/s
Vertex Rate: 0.117 Gvert/s

Maybe I'm missing something conceptually...?

Triangle Rate and Vertex Rate? you don't need those irrelevant stuff

my signature tells you exactly how strong PS4's gpu is compared to X1's gpu.

PS4 GPU: 1152 GCN, 1.84 TFLOPS, 72 TMUs, 32 ROPs, 8GB GDDR5
XB1 GPU :: 768 GCN, 1.31 TFLOPS, 48 TMUs, 16 ROPs, 8GB DDR3+eSRAM

I agree that triangle rate is a silly measurement as there is no standardization across any industry when it comes to measuring how fast the GPU can draw a triangle. Vertex rate is still interesting information to know though.

Just for some clarification though, I'm not trying to start a GPU comparison topic between the Xbox One and PS4. I'm just genuinely curious about how vertex rate and triangle rate can be the same and wanted to see if anyone had the answer.

come on dude, he didnt try to mock the xbox one.he simply said how strong the ps4s gpu is as compared to the One's.

I already know ps4 is more powerful than x1..he is a known troll...just look at his signature. I guess he believes power = fun

Triangle Shader 6 to be GOTY for PS4 lol. Still no TF sadly :(
