Because if a game came out in a previous year then it is not a candidate for a current GOTY award. A resolution bump does not make it a new game which is why I used the PC analogy. I bought a new CPU last year and was able to crank up the shadow resolution and a few other minor options in Skyrim. Does that mean that Skyrim (PC) should have been a valid GOTY candidate for 2013?

The Last of US Remastered did not come out last year. And yes, Skyrim: Legendary Edition certainly was a valid choice for GOTY 2013.

Dark Souls 2 is my GOTY so far.

Potentially awesome games are Sunset Overdrive and Far Cry 4 for me as well.

There are no rules for GoTY awards. Seven thousand sites hand them out and ports have one them before.

I'm aware of that. What I'm saying is that it's absurd to hand out awards to games that aren't new. And an HD rehash does not make it a new game. Some sites may try to hand out GOTY awards for it anyway, but they're wrong to do so.

The Last of Us did come out last year and bumping up the resolution does not make it a new game. And no, bundling Skyrim DLC with the game doesn't make it new either. That is beyond absurd. Stuff like Age of Empires 2 and Final Fantasy 7 for example saw re-releases on PC last year too. Does that make them GOTY candidates? And what about RE4 remastered? Does it deserve to win GOTY in 2014 even though its nearly a decade old? No, I don't think so.

RE4 never deserved a single GOTY award ever.
