unfortunately sony fanboys have championed (number)p as the spew they are going to parrot ad nauseam as the only metric for visuals so pretty much have to deal with it. its the same kind of morons that only look at the Horse Power on a car to determine its performance. sometimes people are really so stupid that things have to be dumbed down to the point that they can look at a single metric.

a smart developer would simply render to a non 16:9 resolution then use fancy scaling but maintain native vertical pixel count like killzone did with 960x1080 (techically still 1080p)

For example with 32MB of edram on XB1 this is what i would do.

1280 x 1080 resolution.

1382400 pixels still 24 bytes per pixel which is 6x 32 bit buffers. you can do 5 x 32 bit frame buffers, and one 32 bit depth buffer.

Here's a better link from a few weeks ago....

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/05/13/the-witcher-3-dev-discusses-ps4-xbox-one-resolutions

"It's more of a PR differentiation, which is very important for Sony right now - and they are using it, obviously - than something that is really meaningful to gamers.

We're definitely working to max out each of the platforms in terms of what we can get, because that's a crucial element of The Witcher. Will there be big differences? Really I don't think so. It's too early to say. If there will be, they will be tiny. It will be more like people talking 'hey, I have this and you have that and this is better"

It is if they make it into one. It's actually a "visual differentiation". Go figure.

Developers should be using the technique GG did with killzone. It was ingenious to get a framebuffer the size of 720p to produce very close to the IQ of a 1080p image.

no thanks interlace blending is the worst. its almost as if guerrila games goes out of its way to make their games terrible from a gameplay perspective.

interlacing means you're getting old frame data and current frame data simultaneously meaning its already one frame behind. also interlacing is the worst during frame changes which is also another important aspect in a competitive shooter.

theres a reason why people go out of their way to get 120hz and low response monitors.

The developer is maxing out each version and doesn't believe there will be any tangible difference. So anyone touting "visual differentiation" is just spouting more "pr differentiation" as its against the developers own claims of how the final product will appear.

Its PR bull that is perpetuate by ponies who csnt even tell what 1080p is and only say its a big deal when xbox gamers are not 1080p.

Then of course they 180 and say graphics dont matter at all for indie garbage like Sports Friends.
