Since 2012 was the year when the Wii U was first released to start the 8th generation of consoles, how long do you guys predict this generation will last before we see the 9th generation of consoles come out?

Given that the XBOX 360/PS3/Wii generation lasted a lengthy 7-8 years, it is quite possible that this generation could last up to 10 years or more.

Microsoft will try to prematurely end it by rushing to market with a console capable of 1080p so Ill say 4 years.

if it continues to go like this, look for MS to make an early move.
nintendo is always a wildcard though.

Numbers will pick up for the X1 and people will start to care even less and less about resolution.

I say six years minimum for MS/Sony, maybe less for Nintendo.

If 4k or whatever new resolution becomes very mainstream within a few years, we will see a gap for maybe a year or two then the new generation of consoles will be ushered in. Unless the companies can utilize software to make up for the lack of hardware I don't see the consoles going past 2018-2019. 2020 at the latest. Remember how the PS3/360 had very powerful cards for the cost of the console, that helped extend the lifespan. I foresee companies rushing out newer consoles at shorter intervals if they don't want to eat the cost of manufacturing. So instead of the very long lifespan as last gen consoles, we will see them arrive every 4-5 years instead of 7-8. Unless of course next gen the companies learn from this and start beefing up hardware again.
