The current ten games have better production values. High Def, surround sound, big name actor likenesses, voices, and performances. These are appealing to people.
Under the hood of the games you have more advanced programming allowing for more realistic environments, more sophisticated gameplay elements, and smarter A.I.. Again, these things are appealing to people.
Of course, that doesn't mean the classics are crap. Many gamers enjoy them, and they should. But when it comes to digital media, the age of something definitely shows. People like new and shiny things.
ALL games should have a Single Player mode. I can always guarantee I want to play when I turn on my system. I can't guarantee others will at the same time.
I don't personally find modern gaming to be better than games in the past, but certain aspects are better with modern gaming, like graphics (polygon count and resolution), scale of the game, and online gaming.
