It had a credit card on it and my saves. It had the grinding drive issue but also had a network adapter issue which now kind of has me wondering if I'll get the same box back or another unit.
If its the latter, will they just install my old HDD and I'll be ok?

I doubt they will install your old hdd but if they repair your Xbox to be sold the hdd will be formatted.

how long did you have it before it started grinding your gears

Happened from the get-go. The controller unbinding every few seconds to minute was not long after.
So what of my save data? All gone? I only had 2 retail games 4- if you count outlast and KI, and 3 arcade games but re-downloading them will be bad enough

What Estocassassin said is most likely what will happen, but if you want to be safe just change your password from the xbox website. Even if your console was set to automatically log in it won't be able to now that the password is different. Your gamertag might still be on the hard drive, but no one will be able to log in to it.

Well, I know it would work that way on the 360.

I wiped my hdd for the exact reason.

You never know.

Hope I get the same unit back. But I doubt it.
