Not really "true" 7.1 with a headset. A decent one will still sound really nice but nothing has been announced yet that's exclusive to Xbox One.

This. 7.1 is seven speakers plus one bass module.

5.1 or 7.1 aren't really accurate terms for the way these headsets work. The 7.1 term is more misleading because you can't get 7.1 over toslink optical.

But when they do say 5.1 or 7.1, then at least you know that they'll use more than just two channels like the Xbox One headsets.

Should I get the Astro a50's or wait for whatever comes out this Holiday season?

The key to the Astros is the Mixamp. The headset it's self isn't good. It's decent. Wait for them to come out with a new mixamp for the ps4 and xbox one. Right now they had to make a firmware update for the mix amp pro that makes ps3 and 360 sound trash but fixes ps4 and Xone sound.

I didn't do the firmware update and the sound is fine for me using it with the Xbox One. I'm using the old model, not the 2013 and beyond model (current model)
