Any word on a redesign, because im its what everyones waiting on

Won't happen for a while, it's dependant on node processes. 20nm mass production is next year but console manufacturers usually wait a year or two before taking it up - 65nm started early 2006, 360 started using it about 18 months later then fully (i.e. both CPU and GPU, not just CPU) a year later. 45nm was also around 2 years later than first production. Why? Because if you're an early adopter you'll probably get sub-par yields which for something you want millions of, isn't what you want.

Also, why is tied to nodes? Power and size reduction. Why do they usually get cheaper after each redesign? You have a wafer, you can only get a certain number of chips on it. 28nm currently for example. Going to 20nm would be (20^2)/(28^2) = ~.5 - transistors (being 2d) will be around half the area of the previous full node. This means you can get more chips out of the same size wafer (smaller transistors = greater transistor density), which means more consoles. It also reduces power consumption, with a 20-30% reduction being common. This also has the benefit of less heat generated = less cooling needed = smaller fan, less airflow being needed = smaller console = fewer materials = cheaper!

This gen is using quite a bit less power than last from the get go, I'd imagine that an internal power supply would be possible for MS with a node jump. Whether they do or not is another matter.

Power use:

microsoft doesnt want to redesign, because it doesnt care. ever heard honda civic 2012 sale was not bad, but they came out with honda civic 2013 redesign exterior and interior, because they care about the brand and their fan. microsoft? microsoft tell you bend over and >.<

frankly, i think microsoft can do a redesign

1>streamline the hardware and get rid of pointless component -> save money cut price
2>use better quality part, that bluray disc play chew disc is the horror
3>bigger hdd space, so buyer dont have to worry about adding external space
4>UI software streamline, get rid of useless UI and make it easy to use. make that stupid win 8 OS not hugging all resources. free up resources for devs

Sure I can see Microsoft wasting more money on a brand that they've already discussed shutting down in. Forget the fact that they've already given in to all the other whiny complaints.. now people want a redesign after less than a year. So let's hope they waste more money and get on that!

Why did you put your hope for a software redesign? Is this not a thread talking about hardware revisions?

They face-lifted the 9th gen civic because the first effort was less functional, boring, and looked a lot like the 8th gen. And the interior has minor adjustments. A game console face lifted for aesthetics alone, less than a year after release is stupid. A car which people bought less of because of it's looks, and also drive quality, is a different animal. You can't compare the two.

Not a redesign but custom skins and a bigger hard drive. It just came out, there's no need for redesign, its not like it had RROD or major hardware problems.
