Every gaming company loses money on console hardware due to marketing and R&D.

How much money did Sony lose during the PS3's first year when they were selling the system for $600 but it cost $800 in parts?

Few things. Firstly, blu-ray was a very new tech at the time. Secondly, billions on R&D for CELL. Didn't they also contain PS2s for backwards compatibility? None of those apply for either the PS4/X1.

Except for Nintendo, selling console hardware at a loss and making it up selling games is common and makes for some pretty legit arguments that gamers should be disappointed with the cost of these consoles.

Misleading thread. They didn't lose 400, their profits decreased by 400

Reading the article and understanding math? That is a bit much to ask.

Both PS4 and Xbone have been selling at a profit since day one.

I acknowledged that, hence by point about gamers being disappointed in the cost.

A loss of money for the sake of innovation is really no loss at all my friends. Rejoice!

But the Xbox brand has never been profitable for Microsoft. Sony made gold with PS1 and PS2. Big difference.

Good topic to catch out those that simply read the title, and those that actually read the article.

The division didn't report $400m in losses, it's overall profits dropped by $400m when compared to last year, with R&D costs and launch costs cited as the reason.

The Computing and Gaming Hardware division (that the Xbox family belongs to) still made billions in profit regardless.

People like Steve Bhalmer and Bill Gates have this as pocket change. The man just bought the Clippers for what? 2 billion $. Not a good thing for sure that they lose money.

Same with Sony and the same with Nintendo. They will have losses on consoles, especially this early on.

Didn't Sony just recently say they're already profitable on PS4? Or was that the whole PlayStation division?
