WHY is Xbox ridiculously unpopular in Japan?

Japenese culture insists that they support Japanese companies. This is why MS has been doing much better in the US than Sony. The same sort of thing exists in the US too. Many people like to support American companies, so the 360 demolished the PS3 in the US.

MS doing better than Sony in the US? since when? O.o

Since for a long time.

Japan has been a tad iffy on foreign products, especially american, since we put a bunch of them living here in camps and dropped 2 nukes on them. Rightfully so.

Why do we buy so many Japanese cars after they bombed Pear Harbor and killed so many of our troops in WW2? Never buy Japanese products ok?

The only time Playstation had better hardware was with the PS4. The original Xbox was better than the PS2 and the PS3 and 360 were more or less the same. The PS4 isn't even significantly better.

And exclusive for this and last gen are certainly debatable.

I'd say it really comes down to the first Xbox. Microsoft didn't really try to cater very much to the Japanese market with it. Just DOA and Ninja Gaiden, pretty much.

the 360 put forth a lot of effort at the start. Ace Combat 5, Blue Dragon, Ninety Nine Nights, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Versperia and temp exclusivity on games like Enternal Sonata, Enchanted Arms and Star Ocean. And the 360 even managed to snag previously exclusive major Japanese game franchises like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. The 360 actually managed to sell significantly better than the original Xbox.

But around 2009 Microsoft sort of stopped trying. It's hard to blame them, they put forth a strong effort with the 360 but it just didn't work out. But that's not the attitude you take if you're going to stay in that market.

Microsoft's first mistake was coming out so much later than the PS4. They already had a disadvantage with name brand, they basically completely forfeited that market when they gave Sony almost a year head start.

Theres a stigma with the Xbox brand in Japan they should have just called it something else and redesigned it.

On top of that the Xbox had a niche appeal for delivering western games but at this point the xbone doesn't really offer a whole lot more there than the PS4 does. It really hurts too when a game Destiny is being published exclusively on PS4 in Japan.

I don't think Japanese people stay bitter about things so long afterwards. I didn't think Americans did either?

The 9/11 terrorist attacks happened almost 13 years ago. So naturally people still remember it and talk about it around this time each year, though the talk about it gets a little less each year. Those who are old enough to remember it will never forget it, they just don't talk about it as much.

Where's WW2 and the nukes dropped on Japan was just over 79 years ago, so while those old enough to remember it still haven't forgotten, most of those who were old enough to remember it are dead now and to the new generation, WW2 was just something they studied in history. Their xenophobia likely comes from being a isolated island nation giving them the mentality that what's going on with the rest of the world doesn't affect them.

you mean all the countries except Japan? You know, Japan also likes Justin Bieber...

It has less to do with "quality"(which is pretty subjective) and more to do with demographics.

It's kind of ridiculous to say xbox is bad and playstation is great anyway when the two brands have been almost exactly the same for the last two console genertions

They aren't into Western games at all. Dudebro doesn't sell consoles over there. Neither do WRPGs, or Sports, or 'open world'.

GTA V was pretty well received.
