Realistically you're not.

I'm not one for story so I may have missed it but I don't recall any hints given to light it on fire in addition to that they clearly show the part you light on fire as metal.

Sorry, but to me, an NPC saying "the windmill pumps poison" does not equate to "use this never seen before mechanic to set fire to a metal object". Tbh it seems like its a design decision left in from when you would have actually had a reason to be carrying a torch around.
Even a stopped clock, tells the right time, twice a day.
