I think it is going to be something, dare i say it? Like a gimmick. As in, it will be a very attractive system for casual gamers to keep playing and feeling that their pokemon are more special than all the others out there.
But for tournament and online play, it is just a stat that has to be maxed out as quickly as possible. Because the system has 1 penalty, if you do not have it maxed. You are not as strong as you could've been. If you are up against an opponent that has a bigger bond than you, you're at a disadvantage, so max it and be done with it.
Having said that, i'm glad because i'm a casual Pokemon player and i do like the idea of a bonding system.

Not many casuals left in this world....I play every game like a mad man...But I do not get into to all the EV/IV training or whatever that is. My team probably couldn't compete, but its very strong for a non-competitive team. --- My name is numbers because I'm an idiot......

We do not have many casuals because everybody keeps calling themselves hardcore players hahaha.
In reality, there are more casuals than hardcore gamers, in every type of game.
