One of the things I love about Pokemon is that interpersonal relationships involving the main character are mostly subjective. I'm a gay male and always chose to perceive the subtexts in ways that best reflected my own life. Pokemon allows the player to project him or herself onto the Pokemon world, and that's why it is awesome.
