To get your mom to physically take you to a nintendo event just to be able to get a special pokemon which wasnt worth it because in the end it's just a bunch of bytes, nothing more and then your gameboy cart would eventually die anyway when your internal battery ran dry

I'm pretty sure, though, that GBA-onward Pokemon games don't use save batteries.

If I recall correctly, RSE used save batteries for time data. I don't remember what problems this caused other than the whole "berries will never grow again" thing.

Time based events didn't occur as a whole, iirc. No daily trainers for example and no Pokenav calls.

Even after Wi-Fi, I STILL had to be lucky enough to get to a friends house in time. Our Wi-Fi uses WPA2 encryption and the old DS and DS Lite only used WPA, so I couldn't connect. The 3DS has solved that problem. (THANK GOD!)
