Factor in how much $$ you make, your current living situation, etc.
I could probably only own something like a normal type like Eevee, Rattata or Bidoof (lol)--basically ones that are more rooted in real-life. Maybe a grass starter like Chikorita (I live near a bunch of parks and my house would smell pretty nice).
A water type is out of the question for me as there are only swimming pools within a 20 mile radius of me.
