Whenever I SR I always do a set amount so that I don't waste too much time trying to get a shiny. So... kinda.

What's soft resetting?

Plus I've found 3 shinies, legitimately, in my life-time on Pokemon. A Caterpie on a Pokemon Gold emulator, a Deerling on Black and a Gligar on Black 2. :)

I don't see too much value to a shiny, since it can make the appearance of a Pokemon seem worse at times. Additionally, since a lot of people use things such as PokeGen and PokeSav now, people won't bother with soft resetting and they will just PokeGen or PokeSav their desired shiny.

^ ^ When you use the special button combo that instantly restarts the game from the title screen.

I've only ever soft-reset the Odd Egg in Crystal because it had a high chance of being shiny, and it didn't take very long to get the shiny Pokémon I wanted.

For anything else, I'd probably give up after a few hundred tries. I could stomach that much, I suppose.

Soft resetting is saving before something and then repeatedly going back to the title screen until it's appropriate for you. I remember some of the games have button combos to do it quickly.

Soft reseting is when you push the a,b,start, select button at the same time and the game restarts without having to turn on and off the power switch. Makes it a little earier when shiny hunting.
