You know, the bump noise when you walk into a wall or barrier or something. It's been the same since Gen 1. BMP

I don't remember if this is true for the DS games, but you ever notice in the older games the bump noise would play over and cancel out half of whatever music track was playing? Probably because of the mono audio output. I just thought it was weird as a kid walking into walls and hearing the bump noise kill my ambient music as if it was emphasizing I was an idiot for walking face first into walls.

Older consoles had a much more limited number of sound channels. Back then, playing any sound effect, at all, meant shutting down a few "instruments" of the audio track.
