Imagine if Fennekin is known as the "Dog Pokemon". Like with Cyndaquill.

He actually worked on all the games up until Platinum, I believe.

No not the actual translator but the head guy. The translator for instance wanted "Round Pokemon" species for Azurill but ended up getting "Polka Dot Pokemon" for instance.

Well it seems to be based off of the Fennec fox, and IIRC foxes are part of the canine family, so... There?

LOL no. Foxes are part of the vulpine family. Silly rabbit.

The vulpine family is something that doesn't exist.

Correct.
Vulpes is the genus, though. <_<

Kings Play Cards On Fat Guys' Stomachs
Not that hard to remember Canis lupus familiaris, shouldn't be that hard to remember Canis vulpes zerda. If it only has two names, guys... it's the genus and species. Not the family.
So, yes, foxes belong to the family canidae and the genus vulpes. They aren't dogs, but they ARE canines. And since when most people talk about canines or K-9, they're referring to dogs - typically vicious ones, at that (I mean, who calls a cute little puggle a canine? such a beautifully vicious word) - it's not too far of a stretch that NoA will try to call it the dog pokemon.
