Eh screw appearances, it's all about making the family better in battle so they can be taken seriously. That's the great thing about evolutions to older Pokemon- it can give their entire line a real presence in battles.

For example, no one used Piloswine or Yanma before Gen IV, but when they evolved into Mamoswine and Yanmega, they became good and now Piloswine and Yanma are spiritually represented through them.
