Although Ash deserves to lose for choosing Torkoal over any of his other pokemon. Could have gone with Snorlax, Muk, Tauros, or Charizard. Instead he chooses his Torkoal that's lost basically every match it's ever been in. Rewatching that battle was a bad idea.

Still better than the Cameron battle if you ask me.

I think that the battle itself was poorly done. Tobias, in theory, using Darkrai wouldn't have been that bad if Ash used his stronger Pokemon and/or didn't send in a team of fodder to get one-shot one after another. Having his use his stronger Pokemon to eventually subdue Darkrai, then having Toabis finish things up with his second Pokemon, would have made for a much more interesting battle.

The issue was that they needed to justify Ash losing quickly, hence the rushed ending for the D/P episodes. Sadly, they made the battle less dramatic and more uninteresting than anything else. I actually watched it with my younger sibling, one who is more in line with the expected demographics of the series, and he completely lost interest because of the OHKOs and knew that Ash would lose minutes into the battle purely because of this.

I think you mean "seriously though, f*** the writers". It's hardly the fault of a character made literally to stomp Ash in to the ground for stomping Ash in to the ground, it's the writers for making him in the first place.

Honestly I would have far preferred for Paul to beat Ash, but finally recognise that Ash is his equal rather than an inferior and recognise they have different methods of doing things but both are effective for certain Pokemon.

Or alternatively established another rival to Ash and had them beat Ash by bringing in a few Pokemon Ash had never seen before, like a Hydreigon or something. Still would've felt a little BS, but at least it wouldn't have felt like the writers were basically saying Ubers are awesome because they're broken.

If Ash used Sceptile, Charizard, Snorlax, Glalie, Swellow/Staraptor (about equal) and Pikachu, he would have had a much better shot. That's for sure.

However, I still think that he would have lost. If Tobias had Darkrai and Latios, he probably had other high powered Pokemon capable of steamrolling teams. Latias, logically would be there. He probably had a Deoxys too.

I actually liked that battle (though I think snorlax being there would have helped him hold his ground longer) it was nice to see a change to the usual endgame rival close match that happen in every other league(except for kanto maybe) yes he was carbstomped pretty badly but he still outpreformed everyone else in this league - as he was the only one who managed to defeat darkrai (and his second pokemon - latios too even though he lostas well in the process)and the whole point was to make tobais an overpowered legendary - use. one could only guess what he pokemon he had ready after latios - in my opinion seeing ash doing pretty well ( relatively) against him right after his impressive battle against paul (which in my opinion was the best battle in the series) really showd how much ash grew as a trainer and that was indirectly commanted upon by synthia who said that one day either ash or paul would be a champion

as for his choices - his lineup was actually pretty solid - heracross has sleep talk . torkoal sceptile and pikachu faught legendaries in the past and held their own/won .gible has the poweful drako meteor and swellow has speed (I think he didn't use his stronger straptor or more durable noctowl because they were probably tired from previous battles - remember this isn't the games) muk wouldn't do well against psychic types (which many legends happen to be) and lastly I think the writers wanted to showcase as many of ash's pokemon as possible. (like in the unova league - thoughthe sinnoh league was the best in my opinion)

also legendaries in the anime are a different concept the in game - they aren't just "ubers" but incredibly rare and powerful pokemon that are extremely hard - almost impossible to catch ) and the fact that tobias has at least 2 of them was meant to present him and an incredibly powerful trainer - in a much different league then anyone else perhaps even champions (as appearntly he beat any other gym leader and league opponent with his darkrai alone except for ash) take notice of the fact that he wins the final match using only his darkrai as well meanig if ash was paired against the other trainer in the semi final he would have probable be the league runner up which is pretty impressive out of 128 trainers that each of them won 8 badges - try to translate that to a real life tournaments where badges would have been a regional like events where you have too defeat a powerful trainer - also remember that the whole process of collecting the badges is a timed one with set period of time that you collect them all to register for that league and I'd guess that if you fail you'll have to collect all 8 from the start..) so ash is actually doing pretty well (though there is still quite a bit of room for improvment as evident in his unova league..)

This only annoyed me because Heracross should have demolished Darkrai. They could have at least made it a close match. Better than losing to a moron with the wrong number of Pokemon who practically threw away two of the five he had.

The entire anime is bs. Tobias was just the icing on the cake.

I'm still baffled people take it seriously.

The BS is about on the level as Special/Adventures, TBH.
