So why exactly are new types wanted/expected?

I'm curious. Anyone care to chime in?

This tends to come up from time to time, but this time around...

We have a new Eeveelution that doesn't really fit the theme of any existing types (and no, it doesn't exude Normal as it looks significantly different from Eevee - more different than is typical for an evolution that matches its previous form's type). Eeveelutions tend to emphasize their types. The only way Sylveon could be like the currently existing Eeveelutions in this way is if it is a new type.

Because GF added 2 new types in Gen 2 and people have been waiting/wishing for more types ever since.

Been ten years since Bite became Dark.
Been ten years since Magnemite got metal.

A change/addition of a move/Pokemon typing could be game breaking/changing.

Poison fans want to use Poison moves more often rather than the odd status move.

People have this ridiculous idea that any time a new Pokemon is revealed without its type also being revealed, it must be because it's a new type. Everybody insisted that Chatot would be a Sound type, everybody insisted that Reshiram would be a Light type, and now everybody is insisting that Sylveon will be a Fairy-type. The reality is that they just do it to build up hype, and it works.

Looks believably Normal to me. Compare to Clefairy or Cinccino.

it looks significantly different from Eevee - more different than is typical for an evolution that matches its previous form's type

So what? It looks about as different from Eevee as Vaporeon does.

The only way Sylveon could be like the currently existing Eeveelutions in this way is if it is a new type.

Absurd. You're grasping at straws, looking for conclusive evidence where there is none.

There's a type change with Eevee -> Vaporeon.

You clearly ignored the part where I said more different than is typical for an evolution that matches its previous form's type.

You really think there's a Normal theme going on? Because not once did I say "this means we're getting a new type". If Sylveon ends up as a Normal-type, then it will break the trend of Eeveelutions fitting the theme of their types.

Rattata -> Raticate.
Vulpix -> Ninetales.
Psyduck -> Golduck.
Poliwhirl -> Politoed.
Remoraid -> Octillery.
Whismur -> Loudred.
Feebas -> Milotic.
Mienfoo -> Mienshao.
Tynamo -> Eelektrik.

Those are just all off the top of my head. If they can all change that much without type changes, why can't Eevee?
