It seems to me that arguing about what animal a pokemon is based off its english name isn't the best idea. The monster design/name was in japanese first, right? Maybe the argument should be based off of that name.

Bulbasaur is inconclusive, Mysterious Seed "Fugishidane" and charmander is Fire lizard "Hitokage".

However acording to bulbapedia bulbasaur was (probably) based on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dicynodonts
