Grass/Dark
Fire/Psychic
Water/Fighting

It will be that, and no one will say otherwise

That set would only work if Froakie learned Megahorn or X-Scissor.

Why...? That would give it a 4x type advantage over Chespin.. The fighting gives Froakie a counter to Chespin's dark typing...

See, if we're going to break the standard triangle. why not just go the full mile?

Fennekin - Magic/Fairy
Froakie - Fire/Fighting
Chespin - a rock. Not a Rock Type... just a rock.

Chespin: anything other than pure Grass
Fennekin: anything other than Fire/Fighting
Froakie: anything other than pure Water

They've already done a two-way triangle in starters before. -_-

When?
Steel isn't SE against Grass or Ground, so Gen IV didn't.
Gens I, II, III, and V each had at least one mono-type so none of them did.

While you're technically right, Empoleon could learn several Ice-type and Flying-type moves, which Torterra is weak against.

It was the fourth gen.

Infernape had STAB advantages over Torterra (Fire) and Empoleon (Fighting).

Torterra had STAB advantages over Infernape and Empoleon (both times Ground).

Empoleon had a STAB advantage over Infernape (Water), and Ice did more damage to Torterra than any of the STAB advantages (STAB + weakness = 3x damage, double weakness = 4x damage) - and was pretty intuitive (Ice on a penguin).

I grant it's a little unnecessarily convoluted (it actually would have worked perfectly had Empoleon been Water/Ice), but MettanAtem seemed to be mocking the possibility of a double triangle... when Grass/Dark, Fire/Psy, and Water/Fight would actually work better than the fourth-gen's triangle.
