I think of a Poke Ball as some sort of suspended animation, in which time more or less stands still when a Pokemon is in there.

see if that was the case, then wouldn't they not take poison damage outside of battle (pre gen V)

Or it's like a mini house the pokemon has, complete with bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, guestroom, living room, and attic. Wouldn't that be epic? XD

i dont think a pokeball stops time for the pokemon in it. so i would say yes, they hold it lol
